For her label BARBARA LANGENDIJK, Barbara combines new interpretations of garment construction, traditional crafts, cultures and rituals. She often collaborates with artists from other disciplines. This results into interdisciplinary works, which are playing with mainstream fashion codes.
Next to her label BARBARA LANGENDIJK, Barbara works as a freelance designer on individual commissioned projects. Continuously she designs the collection for Another-Label, a brand from the Netherlands.
Barbara Langendijk (Haarlem, 1988) graduated from the ArtEZ Fashion Masters (ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Arnhem, The Netherlands) in July 2013.
Barbara did internships at Walter van Beirendonck in Antwerp and Proenza Schouler in New York. During her two-year master course at ArtEZ she followed lectures at Parsons School of Design (New York) and worked on a project with traditional Turkish craftsmen. Her graduation collection called ‘CLOTH’ was featured by *Wallpaper in the Graduate Directory 2014 and requested by Brandon Maxwell for the styling of Lady Gaga.
In September 2014 Barbara received a grant from the Talent Development program of the Creative Industries Fund NL. She debuted at Amsterdam Fashion Week in January 2015 with her ‘Riches from Rags’ collection, inspired on research she did in Japan into traditional crafts and culture.
Shortly after, she worked for MOAM Collective on a womens and menswear collection, together with five other fashion designers. The designers had the chance to work with KLM, Philips and the Textile Lab of the Textile Museum. The collection was presented through a show at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in July 2015.
Barbara designed the costumes for the dance performance ‘DEPARTURE’, by choreographer Juanjo Arques, executed by dancers of the National Ballet and Codarts, during performance festival ORIGIN FESTIVAL CULTURAL in Switserland in August 2015. (the designs were used again for his piece ‘ARRIVAL’ at ORIGIN FESTIVAL CULTURAL in August 2016)
In fall 2015 Barbara got nominated for the Young Designer Award of the Dutch Design Awards 2015.
In Januari 2016 Barbara presented the installation ‘Material.Environment.Mediation 01’ in collaboration with fine artist Jochem Esser and performance artist Lisette Ros. Part of this installation was shown again at the exhibition ‘New Fashion Perspectives’, curated by Hanka van der Voet and Glamcult Studio, April 2016.
September 2016 Barbara Langendijk was part of ‘SHOWROOM ROOMSHOW’. A group presentation by four fashion labels, Camiel Fortgens. Schueller de Waal, Collect (by Lisa Konno&Karin Vlug) and BARBARA LANGENDIJK.
